On October 11th, 2012 two brothers ages 28 and 30, who had been tied to a series of armed robberies in and around Cobb, GA back in 2009, were convicted of a total of 29 crimes and sentenced to life in prison. The charges included armed robbery, kidnapping, false imprisonment, hijacking a vehicle, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and more. As per the state of Georgia's two strikes law, the older brother, Derrius Mack, who had previously served 10 years in prison for armed robbery, was sentenced to life without parole. The younger brother, Christopher Mack, was sentenced to life in prison, however due to his previous felony convictions, the sentence will be served as life without parole.
Both brothers were represented by court-appointed attorneys. Christopher Mac opted to take the stand in his own defense. As part of his testimony, he claimed responsibility for each of the crimes. He also testified that his older brother, Derrius, was not involved. After the brothers were sentenced, Christopher's attorney spoke out stating that he believed his client's sentence was cruel and unusual punishment. He stated that while Christopher had prior convictions, none of them were for violent crimes, but instead were property crimes like theft.
